Haydn Symphony 103 Pierre Boulez Chicago SO 03 12 2006
This is not with the Czeck Philharmonic. Rather, the Vienna Philharmonic. Steude on principle violin. I have the radio broadcast recording. Best I've ever heard with Harnoncourt.
There's a chapter devoted to this work in "Janacek: his life and works," by Jaroslav Vogel, London: Paul Hamlyn, 1962, pp. 213-217. It's a setting of a poem by Jaroslav Vrchlicky, based in turn on writings of the Abbot Joachim de Fiore (d.1202). Vogel tells us, "...out of this muddled and rhetorical poem, Janacek created a deeply-felt declaration of faith in mankind..." Vogel also mentions that Joachim's work was "adapted" in 1527 by Hans Sachs.
Brutal!

1:28 points to Wagner.
sodelicious..............
Boulez was famous for the pluperfect intonation he insisted upon and it stands out even in easier music like this.
Boulez was as great director as composer. His Haydn versions and his Gurre Lieder version are unbelieveable, genial.
What is the source of the text?
Poem by Jaroslav Vrchlický.
Thank God B didn't do much Haydn and Mozart.
My very favorite version -- Robert Johnson music... Alfred Deller sings.
Grande,excelente interpretacio'n.Haydn y P.Boulez!!!!!!!.-
It's great hearing Boulez outside his usual repertoire.
13:45
My reference performances of the "London" Symphonies are Colin Davis's. That's not to take anything from Boulez. I do find his tempo in the 2nd movement to be a bit brisk.
...especially the Second movement!..
11:03 surprise
This symphony is really wonderful. In particular, the finale is divine!!
I. Adagio - Allegro con spirito 00:00 - 08:59 II. Andante più tosto allegretto 9:00 - 18:54 III. Menuetto 18:56 - 24:29 IV.
Drumroll solo suppressed in a symphony which surname is Drumroll ? It"s all Boulez.
He's not the only conductor to have it begin quietly.
@@dion1949 True, but it's much more attention-getting if the drum roll starts forte with a long diminuendo - probably what Haydn wanted.
👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼
... listen also to the tragical and excentric version of Martinon with the Chicago Symphony - the work seems fare another composition ... a very great reading, too
Brings the best in musicpracticisians above. Great solo of the leader in the second movement
Any information concerning this rarely (if ever) heard work would be appreciated!
Vienna Musikverein /Wiener philharmoniker/ September 2004/ LUDHA tenor/ORGONAŠOVA sopran.

Although Haydn always seems to play a secondary role to Mozart, IMO his symphonies nos. 103 and 104 are the pinnacle of the so called "classical" period - Mozart never wrote any instrumental music that surpasses theses. Love the modern instruments so much richer and fuller sound than the scrawny "period" bands.
I can't agree with you on this. Mozart's final 3 symphonies can be said the same too, ie. unsurpassed, esp. the stunning finale of the #41.
Haydn and Mozart are great each in their own way. It's hard to say who was "better" imo.
Oleg A. The best advice is not even to try to say who is ‘better’; just do what the two composers did themselves - appreciate each other. Comparing composers of this stature is as pointless as debating which is the best colour between red and blue.
a tip: you can watch movies at flixzone. Been using them for watching loads of movies during the lockdown.
@Mustafa Jasper yup, been using Flixzone for since december myself =)
@Mustafa Jasper definitely, have been using flixzone for months myself :)
With clarity, balance and lightness of touch like this from a large, modern symphony orchestra, who needs authentic instrument performances ? Apart from a slightly ponderous Minuet, I find the tempi ideal. I just question why he had to put in a rall. leading up to the pause at the end of bar 156 of the second movement (and why everyone seems to make the descending semiquaver thirds in woodwind two bars later staccato - my score indicates legato). He could have allowed the timpanist more of a dominant 'role' in its two solo spots, but we'll never know Haydn's intention. Definitely one of the truest performances of one of my top dozen Classical symphonies. Thanks, UA-cam, and laserpblanca.
Healthy music. Sane. Perfect for a summer's day.
Haydn is the composer I always turn to when I need my spirits raised and my connection to the sane and the rational restored.
Amazing to think that Haydn was an old man when he wrote this work (a very old man for the C18), and yet this work has all the daring, inventiveness and imagination of a young person, setting out to break new ground. Such extraordinary sounds, which still sound contemporary today (from the very first notes on the timpani). What craftsmanship and wealth of ideas!
... and great maturity.-
Excellent comment, Paul.
I absolutely agree with you my dear! GREAT Haydn! Really extraordinary sounds!
Potente sonido,dramatica y misteriosa.Genios,Orquesta,Director y Compositor!!.-
this symphony is so beautiful!!! Haydn is genius!!!
Robert Johnson (1583-1633)
renato45222 Boulez displays his Midas touch here, turning Haydn's music into gold.
It was already gold.
Fair enough.
